UN SECURITY COUNCIL APPROVES INTERNATIONAL FORCE FOR GAZA, SETS PATH FOR PALESTINIAN STATE

The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution authorizing the deployment of an international force to the Gaza Strip, a move that also establishes a potential pathway to Palestinian statehood.

The US-drafted resolution passed with 13 votes in favor, while Russia and China abstained. The measure endorses a peace framework that includes the creation of an International Stabilisation Force (ISF) to work alongside Israeli and Egyptian forces and newly trained Palestinian police units.

The resolution outlines a transitional governing structure for Gaza, to be chaired by the US president and operating through the end of 2027. It also contains language suggesting conditions could eventually be established for “Palestinian self-determination and statehood” once certain reforms and reconstruction efforts are completed.

However, the proposal faces significant opposition. The Israeli government has reiterated its firm stance against Palestinian statehood, while Hamas has rejected the resolution, calling it an imposition of “international guardianship” that favors Israeli interests.

The international force is tasked with securing border areas, supporting demilitarization efforts, and ensuring civilian safety in the devastated territory. Arab and Muslim-majority nations are expected to contribute peacekeeping forces to the mission.
