SOUTH AFRICA’S SPINNERS STUN AUSTRALIA IN SERIES OPENER

1 min read

A devastating spell of spin bowling from Keshav Maharaj powered South Africa to a commanding 98-run victory over Australia in the first one-day international. The hosts, chasing a target of 297, suffered a spectacular batting collapse, losing six wickets for just 29 runs to be bowled out for 198.

The match turned decisively after Australia had made a solid start to their run chase. With the score at 60 without loss, Maharaj entered the attack and proceeded to dismantle the batting order. The left-arm spinner delivered his full ten-over quota in a single spell, finishing with a career-best 5 for 33. His performance earned him the player of the match award.

The collapse was initiated by debutant Prenelan Subrayen, who dismissed the dangerous Travis Head. From that point, Australia’s middle order offered little resistance, with no batsman from that section reaching double figures. Captain Mitch Marsh provided the only sustained fight with a score of 88, but his dismissal signaled the imminent end of the Australian innings.

Earlier, after being sent in to bat, South Africa posted a competitive total of 296 for 8. Aiden Markram led the way with a fluent 82, sharing a 92-run opening partnership with Ryan Rickelton. Captain Temba Bavuma, playing his first match since the World Test Championship final, contributed a patient 65. A late flurry from Wiaan Mulder, who smashed an unbeaten 31, provided valuable late innings momentum.

The match was also notable for the bowling of part-timer Travis Head, who claimed 4 for 57 with his off-spin, including three wickets in the space of three deliveries.

The teams will meet again for the second ODI on Friday.
