South Africa has clinched the one-day international series against Australia with a commanding 84-run victory in Mackay, handing the hosts their seventh loss in eight ODI matches. The Proteas now hold an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match contest.
Facing a target of 279 runs, Australia’s batting lineup faltered once more, with only wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis offering substantial resistance. His aggressive 87-run innings provided temporary hope before his dismissal triggered a dramatic collapse that saw four wickets fall for just nine runs, ending Australia’s chase in the 38th over.
South African pace bowler Lungi Ngidi delivered a standout performance, claiming 5-42 in the absence of injured spearhead Kagiso Rabada. This marked Ngidi’s second five-wicket haul in ODI cricket and effectively dismantled Australia’s middle and lower order.
Earlier, after choosing to bat first, South Africa appeared headed for a total exceeding 300 runs, thanks to significant contributions from Matthew Breetzke (88) and Tristan Stubbs (74). Their 89-run partnership threatened to take the game away from Australia before the innings lost momentum in the final stages, concluding with five deliveries remaining.
Australia’s bowling effort saw multiple contributors, with Marnus Labuschagne, Xavier Bartlett, and Nathan Ellis each claiming two wickets. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa also made crucial interventions, including the final dismissal of the South African innings.
The result extends Australia’s concerning ODI form, with just one victory since November last year. Labuschagne’s position in the lineup faces increased scrutiny after another low score, despite his valuable contributions with the ball.
South Africa will aim for a series clean sweep when the teams meet again in Mackay for the final match on Sunday.
