SOMERSET CLINCH T20 BLAST IN RECORD-BREAKING FINAL

1 min read

Somerset secured the T20 Blast title after a stunning run chase saw them overhaul a formidable Hampshire total in a dramatic final at Edgbaston.

Chasing 195 for victory, Somerset reached their target with six wickets and an over to spare, completing the highest successful chase in the competition’s Finals Day history. The victory was anchored by a magnificent 94 from Will Smeed, whose innings proved decisive in the tense finale.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” said Smeed, who was named Player of the Match. “We’ve worked towards this all season, and to achieve it with this group makes it extra special. The atmosphere was electric, and playing alongside close friends makes these moments unforgettable.”

The match appeared to be swinging Hampshire’s way when they posted 194-6, built on Toby Albert’s aggressive 85 and James Vince’s typically stylish contribution. At the halfway stage, the total looked challenging, particularly given the pressure of a final.

Somerset’s response began steadily before gaining momentum through Smeed’s powerful striking. Even when the required rate climbed to 76 from the final six overs, the batting side maintained their composure. A crucial dropped catch offered Sean Dickson a reprieve, which he capitalized on with a vital partnership alongside Smeed.

Though Smeed fell with victory in sight, Lewis Gregory finished the job emphatically, smashing 18 runs from just five deliveries to seal Somerset’s third T20 Blast title.

For Hampshire, the defeat capped a difficult week that included points deductions in other competitions and coaching changes. They had reached the final thanks to Chris Lynn’s spectacular century in the semi-finals, where he blasted five consecutive sixes in one over against Northamptonshire.

In the other semi-final, Somerset comfortably defeated a depleted Lancashire side by 23 runs, setting up their path to the championship decider.
