1 min read

Construction has commenced in Pyongyang for a memorial honoring North Korean military personnel killed during combat operations in Ukraine. The announcement came during a ceremony attended by the country’s leadership and Russian diplomatic representatives.

The facility, designated as the Memorial Museum of Combat Feats, will feature sculptures, photographs, and artwork commemorating soldiers who participated in the conflict. During the groundbreaking event, the North Korean leader described the planned institution as “a sacred sanctuary dedicated to the immortality of true patriots.”

North Korean forces have been actively engaged alongside Russian troops for approximately one year, with military analysts estimating significant casualties numbering in the hundreds, with several thousand additional personnel wounded. The North Korean leadership credited their soldiers with contributing to what they characterized as decisive military successes against Ukrainian forces.

The relationship between Pyongyang and Moscow has strengthened considerably in recent years, culminating in a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement that includes mutual defense provisions. Both nations have increasingly positioned themselves in opposition to Western powers, with recent cultural exchanges between the two countries highlighting military cooperation.

Thursday’s ceremony was attended by senior government and military officials from North Korea, along with family members of deceased soldiers. Russian diplomatic personnel, including the ambassador to Pyongyang, were also present at the event.
