Lando Norris has accepted responsibility for a collision with teammate Oscar Piastri during the Singapore Grand Prix and will face team-imposed consequences through the remainder of the Formula 1 season.
The incident occurred on the opening lap when the two McLaren drivers made contact while battling for position. Though race officials took no action during the event, the team has since conducted its own review and determined Norris was at fault.
“Lando has taken responsibility for that,” Piastri confirmed. “How lap one unfolded wasn’t how we want to go racing as a team.”
While neither driver nor team officials would specify the nature of the sanctions, Norris acknowledged they would be noticeable. “The team held me accountable for what happened, which I think is fair,” he stated. “There are and will be repercussions for me until the end of the season.”
This represents the latest chapter in McLaren’s careful management of its two championship-contending drivers. The British racing team has previously intervened in similar situations, including team orders at last season’s Hungarian Grand Prix and strategic decisions at Monza earlier this year.
With six races remaining in the championship battle, Piastri currently holds a 22-point advantage over his teammate. Despite the competitive tension, Norris defended the team’s approach to maintaining harmony.
“Internally, it’s pretty simple,” Norris explained. “The interest is preserving the positive teamwork that’s allowed us to go from being last on the grid a few years ago to being the best performing team.”
The situation adds another layer of intrigue to the championship fight as the series prepares for this weekend’s United States Grand Prix.
