FORMER PHILIPPINE MAYOR SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR HUMAN TRAFFICKING SCHEME

1 min read

A former municipal leader in the Philippines has been handed a life sentence after being convicted of overseeing a massive criminal enterprise that exploited hundreds of workers under the guise of an online gambling operation.

The individual, who had previously served as mayor of a town north of Manila, was found to have falsified citizenship documents to secure elected office. Authorities revealed the official was actually a foreign national who used the position to conceal involvement in a sprawling scam compound.

The operation came to light in March 2024 when law enforcement raided the facility following an escape by one of the workers. The complex contained office buildings, luxury residences, and recreational facilities where more than 700 individuals from multiple countries were reportedly forced to participate in fraudulent online activities.

Evidence presented during the trial demonstrated the former official held presidential authority over the company that owned the compound. Prosecutors secured convictions against eight individuals total, with four found guilty of organizing the trafficking operation and four others convicted of participating in trafficking activities.

The case prompted significant policy changes, including a nationwide ban on offshore gambling operations and the expulsion of foreign nationals working at such facilities. The sentencing concludes an investigation that exposed how criminal networks have exploited regulatory systems to establish operations across Southeast Asia, resulting in substantial financial losses across the region.
