Racing driver Liam Lawson expressed outrage after a harrowing incident where he narrowly avoided colliding with two track marshals during the Mexico City Grand Prix. The competitor described the situation as “unacceptable” and warned of potentially fatal consequences.
The alarming moment occurred after Lawson made an early pit stop due to damage sustained on the opening lap. As he rejoined the circuit, he encountered two marshals crossing the track while clearing debris from the initial corners.
“Are you kidding me? Did you just see that?” Lawson radioed his team. “I could have killed them.”
Following the race, the driver voiced his disbelief at the dangerous situation. “I honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” he stated. “I came out of the pits and there were just two people running across the track. I nearly hit one of them – it was incredibly dangerous.”
Lawson emphasized that such incidents must not be repeated. “We can’t understand how marshals can be allowed to cross a live track like that. It’s completely unacceptable and I’m sure we’ll receive an explanation, but this really can’t happen again.”
Race organizers confirmed they are investigating the incident, noting that instructions for marshals to enter the track had been canceled once it became apparent Lawson had pitted. Safety flags were deployed in the area, though the investigation continues into what transpired afterward.
Meanwhile, race winner Lando Norris addressed crowd reactions during the podium ceremony, maintaining a philosophical perspective. “People have the right to express themselves – that’s part of competition sometimes,” he remarked. “I actually find it amusing when it happens. It adds to the entertainment value for me.”
