CUMMINS BATTLES BACK INJURY AHEAD OF ASHES OPENER

1 min read

Australian Test captain Pat Cummins is in a race against time to be fit for the first Ashes Test against England in Perth this November, as he manages a lumbar bone stress injury. The condition has ruled him out of the upcoming T20 tour of New Zealand and a home one-day series against India.

While recent scans cleared the star fast bowler of stress fractures, the injury requires a period of managed rehabilitation. National selector George Bailey expressed confidence that Cummins would be ready to lead the side when the series begins on November 21st, citing the 80-day lead-up as sufficient for recovery.

Should Cummins be unavailable, the Australian squad has ready-made replacements. Scott Boland, who took a spectacular hat-trick in the recent Test against the West Indies, is a strong candidate to join the pace attack. Former captain Steve Smith also provides experienced leadership cover, having stepped in for Cummins on previous occasions.

In a separate development, fellow pace bowler Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from international T20 cricket. The left-armer, Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format, stated that Test cricket remains his top priority. The decision is aimed at preserving his fitness and longevity for future campaigns, including a tour of India, the Ashes, and the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Australia has named its squad for the T20 series in New Zealand, featuring the return of all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and the inclusion of fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis.
