Jeff Bezos is formally returning to an executive leadership role, naming himself co-chief executive of a newly launched artificial intelligence company, Project Prometheus. The venture, which has secured a massive $6.2 billion in initial funding, will concentrate on creating AI systems for engineering and manufacturing applications.
Bezos will share the top position with his co-founder, Vik Bajaj, a scientist and tech executive renowned for his previous work at Google’s experimental division, X, where he established the health technology firm Verily.
The startup has already assembled a team of approximately 100 employees, recruiting talent from leading AI organizations. Despite the significant financial backing and staffing, specific operational details remain undisclosed, including the company’s headquarters and the precise nature of its technology.
This move places Bezos and Bajaj at the forefront of an intensely competitive and capital-rich AI sector, where established players are investing heavily. The announcement coincides with growing scrutiny from some financial experts who are raising concerns about the long-term economic viability of the current AI investment boom, questioning whether the industry can sustain its rapid growth and lofty valuations.
