ALL ABDUCTED KEBBI SCHOOLGIRLS FREED IN RESCUE OPERATION

1 min read

The 24 students taken from their school in Nigeria’s Kebbi state last week have been successfully recovered, according to official statements. The girls were seized during an attack on Government Girls Comprehensive secondary school in Maga town on November 17th.

Authorities confirmed the students’ safe recovery, though specific operational details regarding their release remain undisclosed. One student managed to escape immediately following the initial abduction, leaving 24 in captivity until their recent rescue.

In an official communication, Nigerian leadership expressed relief at the positive outcome while emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures in vulnerable regions to prevent similar incidents.

The Kebbi incident represents the latest in a series of mass kidnappings affecting educational institutions across Nigeria. Just days earlier, over 300 students and staff were taken from a Catholic school in Niger state, with approximately 50 managing to escape over subsequent days.

School administrators indicated the freed students remain under official care while arrangements are made for their reunification with families. Parents expressed both relief and concern about their children’s wellbeing following the traumatic experience.

One father, whose two daughters were among those taken, described the emotional turmoil his family endured during the captivity. “We anxiously await confirmation of their physical and emotional state,” he stated, noting the particular distress experienced by the children’s mother.

Security analysts note that criminal elements frequently target schools and remote communities where government presence remains limited. These groups, often comprised of former pastoralists turned militants, have increasingly used kidnapping as both revenue source and means of asserting control in poorly secured regions.

Educational institutions have become frequent targets for armed groups seeking leverage and attention in Africa’s most populous nation. Since the notorious Chibok abduction over ten years ago, thousands of students have been taken in similar incidents across Nigeria, with many releases occurring only after negotiations and payments.

The persistent security challenges continue to affect communities across religious and regional lines, with recent weeks witnessing additional kidnappings affecting both Christian and Muslim populations in various states.
