ADIL RASHID FOCUSED ON T20 WORLD CUP, RULES OUT ASHES RETURN

1 min read

England leg-spinner Adil Rashid has definitively closed the door on a potential return to Test cricket for the upcoming Ashes series, stating his complete focus remains on the T20 World Cup early next year.

Despite a stellar international summer where his bowling has been described as a masterclass in control, the 37-year-old confirmed he would decline any approach from the Test side. Training in Cardiff ahead of a three-match T20 series against South Africa, Rashid emphasized his contentment with his decision six years ago to step away from red-ball cricket.

“It would be a no,” Rashid stated when asked about a hypothetical call-up. “I’m quite comfortable and confident with the path I’ve chosen. The spinners coming through are very good, and I’m confident they are more than capable.”

His comments come as England begins its final preparations for the T20 World Cup in India, with this series marking the start of a focused buildup that will include tours of Ireland, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. Rashid, currently second in the world T20 bowling rankings, is expected to be a cornerstone of England’s campaign as they look to improve on their runner-up finish in the 2024 tournament.

While the Ashes debate continues elsewhere, the immediate task for the white-ball squad is a formidable South African side, albeit one that has faced recent struggles. England will be without several rested Test players, creating opportunities for others in the squad.

For Rashid, the priority is clear. “The main thing is getting into winning habits,” he said, confirming his intention to continue his international career for as long as possible. While the Test arena may no longer feature the country’s finest modern leg-spinner, batsmen in the shorter formats will continue to face his challenge.
