A memorable White House dinner from 2007 resurfaced in a recent conversation, recalling the night a legendary NFL quarterback found himself in the same room as a monarch.
The story was recounted during a sports broadcast, where former President George W. Bush joined Peyton and Eli Manning. The discussion turned to a formal state dinner held during Bush’s administration, an event that included the late Queen Elizabeth II and the football star.
Peyton Manning recalled his placement at the event, noting that his wife was seated at a prestigious table with the Queen and other distinguished guests, while he was positioned elsewhere. He directly asked the former president if there had been concern that he might embarrass the nation in front of the British sovereign.
The former commander-in-chief confirmed the suspicion with a laugh, admitting, “Yes. Yeah, I was.” He humorously added that his administration had strategically seated the quarterback separately over concerns he might “dribble on your tux.” Bush also complimented Manning’s wife, calling her a “beautiful woman” who enhanced the main table.
The athlete also shared that his mother, who was in attendance, had given him a specific and urgent warning for the evening: “Don’t pat the queen,” reminding him of the strict protocols surrounding the monarch.
Despite the initial anxiety, Manning was well-prepared. He credited President Bush with personally briefing him on the proper etiquette, specifically noting that Americans are not required to bow. The former president assured him that he handled the royal introduction flawlessly and conducted himself with grace.
Following the Queen’s passing in 2022, Manning paid tribute to her on social media, calling it an honor to have met her and praising her “unrivaled” service to her country. President Bush also released a statement at the time, fondly remembering the Queen’s intellect and charm, and recalling tea at Buckingham Palace as one of his fondest memories from his time in office.
