NEW BILLY BRAGG SONG BACKS GAZA AID MISSION

1 min read

British musician Billy Bragg has released a new protest song titled “Hundred Year Hunger” to support humanitarian efforts in Gaza. The track coincides with an international aid flotilla currently sailing toward the coastal territory.

The song’s title references historical patterns of food insecurity in the region, with proceeds directed toward humanitarian relief efforts. In social media posts, Bragg described the composition as examining current famine conditions through the lens of decades of systematic deprivation.

Organizers confirm the aid flotilla departed from Barcelona with environmental activist Greta Thunberg among its participants. The mission aims to establish a humanitarian corridor to deliver essential supplies to Gaza, where famine conditions have been widely reported. The vessels are expected to reach their destination in mid-September.

Military authorities recently announced they would no longer implement daily combat pauses for aid distribution in Gaza City, a decision humanitarian organizations warn will worsen the hunger crisis in northern Gaza.

The song features a chorus sung in Arabic, incorporating the terms “sumud,” meaning steadfast perseverance, and “lan narhal,” translating to “we will not leave.” Bragg explained these phrases represent Palestinian commitment to remain on their land despite adversity.

Later this month, Bragg will headline a London benefit concert supporting humanitarian work in Gaza. The event will feature multiple artists with all proceeds going to relief efforts.

This marks Bragg’s first major musical release since his 2021 album “The Million Things That Never Happened.”
