MCLAREN DRIVERS UNITED IN DEFENSE OF TEAM ORDERS AT MONZA

1 min read

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri presented a united front following the Italian Grand Prix, defending McLaren’s decision to implement team orders during the closing stages of the race. The British driver, who ultimately finished second, insisted the team would continue making decisions based on their racing principles regardless of external opinions.

The race at Monza saw Max Verstappen secure a dominant victory for Red Bull, while the McLaren drivers completed the podium. Norris had maintained second position throughout most of the event until a problematic pit stop caused by equipment failure dropped him behind his Australian teammate. Team management subsequently instructed Piastri to surrender the position.

Norris, who faced some vocal disapproval from spectators during the podium ceremony, remained steadfast in his support of the team’s decision. “We operate according to what we believe is correct as a unit, irrespective of outside perspectives,” he stated. “When circumstances arise that are beyond a driver’s control, fairness within the team becomes paramount.”

Piastri echoed his teammate’s sentiments, expressing no reservations about complying with the instruction despite the championship implications. The position swap cost the Australian three additional points in his title pursuit, narrowing his advantage over Norris to 31 points.

“Under these specific circumstances, it was the appropriate course of action,” Piastri commented. “Lando had demonstrated superior pace throughout the event and lost ground through no error of his own. Ultimately, every competitor wants to secure championships through their own performances and controllable factors.”

Both drivers acknowledged that the team would conduct a thorough review of the incident and their established protocols. Team principal Andrea Stella confirmed they would examine their procedures regarding pit stop complications and reinforce their strategic principles in consultation with both drivers.

Despite the mixed reception from fans, Norris maintained perspective about the audience reaction. “The support we received significantly outweighed any negative responses,” he noted, “and that’s what truly matters to us as competitors.”
