Tottenham Hotspur appear set to finalize a significant transfer for Dutch international Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig in a deal valued at approximately £52 million. The attacking midfielder has completed medical examinations and agreed to personal terms, with the transfer expected to be confirmed imminently.
The potential arrival comes at a crucial time for Spurs, who have faced midfield shortages due to injuries to key players. The club had previously explored other midfield options but missed out on several targets to Premier League rivals.
Chelsea had shown preliminary interest in Simons but never formalized their approach, instead focusing their attention on alternative attacking options including Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho. The Blues have also maintained dialogue with Barcelona regarding midfielder Fermín López, though any potential deal would likely exceed £50 million.
Tottenham capitalized on Chelsea’s hesitation, moving swiftly to secure terms with Leipzig. The German club is motivated to complete the transaction to facilitate their own pursuit of Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott.
Simons, who can operate centrally or in wide positions, had expressed his desire for a new challenge this summer. The 22-year-old developed through Barcelona’s youth system before professional stints at PSV, Paris Saint-Germain, and most recently RB Leipzig.
In other transfer developments across the Premier League:
Wolverhampton Wanderers are negotiating with Genk for Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare, who netted 17 goals in Belgium’s top division last season. The potential transfer fee ranges between £15-20 million.
West Ham United have secured Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from Southampton in a £38 million agreement. The Hammers are also close to finalizing the £17.2 million acquisition of French youth international Soungoutou Magassa from Monaco as manager Graham Potter seeks to strengthen his squad following a difficult start to the campaign.
West Ham continue to monitor additional midfield options and could pursue a third signing in that position, while also considering goalkeeper and striker reinforcements. The club is willing to entertain offers for defender Nayef Aguerd, who has attracted interest from both domestic and French clubs.
