As Chloe Kelly stepped up to take the decisive penalty in the European Championship final, the moment crystallized for England’s substitutes. For goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse, the sequence was unforgettable: the collective realization, the sprint across the pitch, and the overwhelming emotion as the ball hit the net. Within days of those historic celebrations, she was back in Florida preparing for National Women’s Soccer League action with Orlando Pride.
The 30-year-old shot-stopper recently extended her contract with the defending champions through 2027, solidifying her connection to the club she now considers home. “Playing abroad removes certain pressures,” Moorhouse notes. “The environment here allows me to focus purely on football without external distractions.”
Her first major international tournament provided a stark contrast in atmosphere. After England’s initial setback against France, the squad demonstrated remarkable unity. “We held crucial meetings where we committed to supporting each other completely,” Moorhouse recalls. “What stood out was how we maintained strong bonds throughout – whether relaxing together or battling on the pitch. The comeback journey through the knockout stages was extraordinary.”
As part of the goalkeeping unit supporting first-choice Hannah Hampton, Moorhouse contributed to England’s penalty preparation. “The work behind those saves involved detailed analysis and strategic discussions,” she explains. “Our role was to provide guidance that helped Hannah make those critical decisions in pressure moments.”
Back in Orlando, Moorhouse has established herself as the clear first choice, recording 14 clean sheets in 29 appearances during their championship season. “I embrace the responsibility that comes with being the starting goalkeeper,” she says. “It’s both a challenge and a privilege.”
The team currently positions itself for another playoff run, trailing league leaders Kansas City Current. Moorhouse attributes much of their success to coach Seb Hines’ approach. “The stability he’s brought has been crucial,” she observes. “He establishes clear principles while empowering players to contribute creatively to our style of play. It’s a collaborative environment that brings out our best.”
Despite their championship status, the goalkeeper insists the team remains hungry. “Last season’s achievements were remarkable, but we’re focused on continuing our progress. Kansas City sets a high standard, but we believe in our ability to compete at the highest level. Our collective determination remains strong – we have more to accomplish together.”
