SMITH FIRES BACK AT PANESAR IN FIERY ASHES PRESS CONFERENCE

1 min read

Australian captain Steve Smith has responded sharply to former England spinner Monty Panesar, who suggested England should target Smith by reviving memories of the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.

While Smith claimed the remarks “didn’t really bother me,” he then referenced Panesar’s widely-mocked 2019 appearance on the quiz show Mastermind. Addressing reporters, Smith invited them to recall the broadcast, calling it “pretty comical” and citing specific incorrect answers given by Panesar about geography and literature.

Panesar later described Smith’s reaction as proof the issue remains on his mind, suggesting the England team could use it as “ammunition” during the series.

Amid the war of words, Smith confirmed Australia’s lineup for the first Ashes Test, revealing two debutants: Jake Weatherald and Brendan Doggett. Marnus Labuschagne returns to the number three position following strong domestic form.

Smith also hinted at a preference to bat first if he wins the toss, a tactic he has favored in the majority of his Tests as captain.

England, who are expected to finalize their team after a final training session, are looking to overturn a long history of difficult Ashes tours to Australia. Captain Ben Stokes emphasized the squad’s focus on “writing their own history” and returning home as winners.
