Australian fast bowler Scott Boland has identified England’s Joe Root as the primary batsman his side aims to neutralize in the upcoming Ashes series. Speaking as the Australian squad began training in Perth, Boland emphasized the importance of targeting top-order players to limit their influence on the game.
With Pat Cummins sidelined due to a back issue, Boland is set to lead the Australian bowling attack in the first Test. He pointed to Root’s record and leadership as reasons for focusing on the former England captain. “It’s always a priority to challenge the best in the opposition,” Boland remarked. “When a player of Root’s caliber is at the crease, the goal is to restrict his contribution as much as possible.”
Boland, who enjoyed a breakout Ashes series on home soil four years ago, acknowledged the need to adapt following a less dominant tour of England in 2023. He indicated that while minor adjustments are planned, his fundamental approach remains unchanged.
Meanwhile, Cummins participated in an extended net session as part of his recovery, raising hopes for a possible return during the day-night Test in Brisbane next month. Captaincy duties for the Perth match will be handled by Steve Smith.
