INDIA FIGHTS BACK TO CLAIM OPENING WORLD CUP VICTORY

1 min read

A determined batting recovery led by Deepti Sharma secured India a 59-run victory over Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Women’s Cricket World Cup, a contest shortened by rain.

Facing a precarious position at 124 for six, India’s innings was resurrected by a crucial 103-run partnership between Sharma (53) and Amanjot Kaur (57). Their stand propelled the team to a competitive total of 269 for eight after their innings was reduced to 47 overs. Sri Lanka’s bowling attack was spearheaded by spinner Inoka Ranaweera, who captured four wickets for 46 runs.

In reply, Sri Lanka’s chase was anchored by a 52-run partnership between captain Chamari Athapaththu (43) and Harshitha Samarawickrama (29). However, after they reached 103 for two, their progress was halted. Deepti Sharma proved instrumental with the ball as well, taking three wickets for 54 runs to help dismantle the Sri Lankan batting order, which was eventually bowled out for 211.

Reflecting on the hard-fought win, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur praised the team’s resilience. “It was a challenging match,” she stated. “The manner in which our players managed the pressure situation was exceptional and it’s rewarding to see the team unite for a national victory.”

Sharma, whose all-round performance was pivotal, commented on her contribution, saying, “We executed our plans effectively, and I am comfortable playing such innings.”

The tournament continues with further group stage matches scheduled in the coming days.
