ENGLAND ALL-ROUNDER CHRIS WOAKES ANNOUNCES INTERNATIONAL RETIREMENT

1 min read

Veteran England cricketer Chris Woakes has confirmed his retirement from international duty, concluding a distinguished career that spanned nearly fifteen years. The 36-year-old bowler and batsman made the announcement, stating the time was right to step away from the highest level of the game.

Woakes’ decision follows a recent shoulder injury that sidelined him for the upcoming winter tour, coupled with the non-renewal of his national contract. Rather than pursue a return to the England setup in 2026, he will now focus on concluding his playing days within the domestic game.

In a personal statement, Woakes reflected on fulfilling a childhood dream. “The moment has come, and I feel the time is right for me to retire from international cricket,” he said. “Playing for England was an aspiration from my earliest days, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have lived that dream. I will always look back with the greatest pride on representing my country and the friendships forged with teammates over these 15 years.”

His international record is one of significant achievement. Across 62 Test matches, he claimed 192 wickets. He also secured a unique place in history by earning a spot on all three of the prestigious honours boards at Lord’s Cricket Ground. His contributions were pivotal in England’s global successes, being a key member of the squads that won both the 50-over World Cup in 2019 and the T20 World Cup in 2022.

While a formidable force in all formats, Woakes was particularly potent in home Test conditions. His record in England—148 wickets at an average of 23.47—stands comparison with the nation’s finest fast bowlers. This prowess was on full display during the 2023 Ashes series, where his 19 wickets after being brought into the side at 2-0 down were instrumental in helping England draw the series, an effort for which he was named Player of the Series.

Woakes also expressed his profound gratitude to his family for their “unwavering love and support,” and thanked the fans, coaches, and teammates who had been part of his journey. Having spent his entire domestic career with Warwickshire to date, he is now in discussions with the county regarding a new contract. He is also considering opportunities in franchise T20 cricket for the coming winter.
