TRAGEDY ON NEPAL’S YALUNG RI AS AVALANCHE CLAIMS SEVEN LIVES

1 min read

A deadly avalanche has struck Mount Yalung Ri in Nepal, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals including five international climbers and two local guides. The incident occurred Monday when the avalanche swept through the base camp area located at approximately 4,900 meters elevation.

According to official sources, five additional individuals sustained injuries in the avalanche and are receiving medical attention. Rescue operations have faced significant challenges due to deteriorating weather conditions that have persisted throughout the region. Initial helicopter rescue attempts were forced to abort due to poor visibility and dangerous flying conditions, with efforts scheduled to resume at first light Tuesday.

Ground rescue teams are currently making their way to the remote site on foot. The identities and nationalities of the deceased climbers have not been formally released by authorities, though preliminary reports suggest the group included multiple nationalities.

Mount Yalung Ri stands at 5,600 meters and has traditionally been considered an accessible peak for those new to high-altitude mountaineering. Nepal’s autumn climbing season, which falls between the monsoon and winter periods, attracts numerous international climbers to the country’s varied peaks, from the world’s highest mountains to more accessible summits.

The incident marks another sobering reminder of the inherent dangers of high-altitude climbing, even on mountains considered suitable for novice climbers. The Himalayan nation’s rugged terrain and unpredictable weather patterns continue to present challenges for both climbers and rescue personnel.
