A Philippine government vessel was intentionally struck by a Chinese ship in contested areas of the South China Sea, according to authorities in Manila. The incident occurred early Sunday morning near Thitu Island in the Spratly archipelago.
Officials reported that prior to the collision, the Chinese vessel discharged water cannon at the Philippine boat. Minutes later, the same ship reportedly made deliberate contact with the stern of the Philippine vessel. While the impact caused some structural damage, no crew members sustained injuries.
Manila’s maritime forces have condemned the actions as aggressive tactics but affirmed their commitment to maintaining presence in the region.
Chinese authorities have presented a contrasting account, alleging the Philippine ship disregarded multiple warnings and initiated dangerous maneuvers that led to the encounter.
The South China Sea remains a focal point of regional disputes, with overlapping territorial claims creating regular confrontations between vessels of various nations. This latest incident represents another escalation in the ongoing territorial disagreements that have characterized the region for years.
